L’accusa: “È omicidio volontario premeditato”. La giornalista impegnata in diverse inchieste contro la corruzione è stata uccisa con una bomba piazzata nella sua auto il 16 ottobre 2017. La procuratrice generale ha accusato formalmente Yorgen Fenech di complicità nell’omicidio e associazione a delinquere 

La procura generale di Malta ha chiesto l’ergastolo per il magnate Yorgen Fenech con l’accusa di essere il mandante dell’omicidio della giornalista Daphne Caruana Galizia, episodio ha sconvolto il paese nel 2017.

La procuratrice generale, Victoria Buttigieg, ha accusato formalmente Fenech, arrestato nel novembre 2019 mentre tentava di lasciare Malta sul suo yacht, di complicità nell’omicidio e associazione a delinquere. L’atto d’accusa, che conferma che Fenech sarà processato, contiene la richiesta di ergastolo per omicidio e tra i 20 e i 30 anni di carcere per associazione a delinquere. Lo riporta il Guardian. Fenech si dovrà difendere dall’accusa di “omicidio volontario premeditato”.

Secondo l’accusa Fenech avrebbe ideato e ordinato cianuro puro in polvere dall’Ucraina e una serie di armi, tra cui granate e pistole, e centinaia di proiettili. Tutte le informazioni provengono da e-mail trovate sui dispositivi di Fenech che mostrano come avrebbe pagato in Bitcoin per il veleno e le armi. Sono stati presentati i messaggi scambiati tra Fenech e suo fratello come prova che l’imputato stava tentando di fuggire da Malta a Palermo quando è stato arrestato nel novembre 2019.

È stato respinto l’argomento della difesa che Fenech stava solo portando il suo yacht da Malta verso la Sicilia per riparazioni.

A processo ci saranno anche due presunti sicari, i fratelli George e Alfred Degiorgio, mentre il terzo, Vince Muscat, è già stato condannato a 15 anni di carcere dopo essersi dichiarato colpevole.

L’atto d’accusa è stato presentato dal vice procuratore generale poco prima di una seduta programmata per una richiesta di cauzione davanti al tribunale penale.

Daphne Caruana Galizia: Businessman Yorgen Fenech charged with ordering journalist’s murder

A Maltese businessman is to stand trial over accusations he ordered and paid for the killing of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for Yorgen Fenech, who faces charges of accessory to murder and criminal association.

The killing of Caruana Galizia in a car bomb rocked the Mediterranean island and sent shockwaves across the European Union.

Fenech, formally charged on Wednesday by Malta’s Attorney General, was first arrested over the murder in November 2019. The tycoon — who is the alleged mastermind behind the assassination — has denied the charges.

One man has already been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to murdering Caruana Galizia. Two other suspected hitmen have been charged with planting the bomb and are awaiting trial.

Another suspect, the alleged “middleman”, has agreed to reveal details of the plot to kill the investigative journalist and was granted a pardon.

An independent inquiry last month found that Malta’s government must “bear responsibility” for her death, even if it did not play a direct role.

The probe said that Maltese authorities had created a “culture of impunity” that led to her killing and had failed to protect Caruana Galizia.

Malta’s former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat resigned in January 2020 following Fenech’s arrest and widespread protests but was never accused of any wrongdoing.

Fenech has himself blamed Malta’s government for the murder, and also alleged that Maltese authorities had violated his rights by keeping him in pre-trial detention in poor conditions.

However, the European Court of Human Rights has dismissed the complaint and says the claims were “manifestly ill-founded”.

The International Press Institute said Wednesday’s indictment was “a significant step in the fight to prevent impunity for Caruana Galizia’s murder”. No trial date has yet been set.
