As of September 16, 2025, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 201 journalists and media workers were among the more than tens of thousands killed in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon since October 2023, making it the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.
To date, CPJ has documented:
- 199 journalists killed by Israel, of which 193 were Palestinians killed in Gaza and six Lebanese killed in Lebanon.
- 2 Israeli journalists killed by Hamas.
- 152 journalists reported injured.
- 2 journalists reported missing.
- 92 journalists arrested.
- Multiple assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of family members.
By silencing the press, Israel is silencing those who document and bear witness to what human rights groups say is a genocide. CPJ calls on the international community to: take immediate action to end the unlawful attacks on journalists; grant international media independent access to Gaza to be able to investigate and report what is happening without fear of censorship or assassination; and hold Israel to account.
